Hyperextension exercises target lower back muscles when the thigh pads are adjusted higher, minimizing hip rotation and allowing the lower back muscles to take on most of the workload. Hyperextension exercises can also target hamstring muscles like a modified straight-leg deadlift exercise by adjusting the thigh pads to a lower position allowing for more rotation at the hips, which engages the hamstring muscles more.
